Fundraising Ideas for CD

topic posted Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:28 PM by  Spidra
I've got a couple musicians willing to work with me on a CD. I've got a studio I can record in. But even when people are doing you favors and using sliding scale, it's still expensive. Getting into credit card debt sure fucked me as far as my plans to get a CD recorded by this last spring. I'm afraid it'll end up being one of those dreams that never happens unless I do some serious fundraising. Now, knowing the cards that are subscribed to this tribe, I'm expecting some joke answers, but I hope I get some serious answers as well.

"Rent" party? Benefit concert with some generous musician friends? How can I make this happen?

Not sure what to suggest since I have no idea how much you'd need to scrape together. The benefit concert sounds like a goodie of an idea to me. I'll bet you could get a lot of swell folks together for that.

I will say I highly recommend your recordings focus on your voice with only the sparest arrangements. If I were producing your record I would insist upon that.

Do you have a set of songs prepared? Originals? Covers?

Since I don't know how many hours it'll take it's hard to estimate a cost, but I think I'd need to raise at least a grand before I'd feel I could afford to book the studio time and get the musicians in there.

The song selection is definitely a quandary. I don't like the idea of doing an album completely of covers because it makes it look like I can't write. I happen to think that although I'm not prolific, I've written some good songs. However, my audiences lately are completely unused to my originals and what they'd sound like because I've been hemmed in by the accompanists I could afford. Right now I think it's possible I would actually record two albums - one covers and one originals. Possibly with a different set of musicians for each.

Er... and I'm not actually sure I could get any musicians to do a benefit bill with me. They've got their own problems and own CDs to fund, I'll bet.

Perhaps a generalized fundraiser, with a few folks? You can then split the money evenly, and then have a raffle for a prize from each individual performer, that would go to them. The prize itself could be something like naming rights for the CD or artwork, or even just an extra-special thank you. That is, if you can't convince friends to donate a special kind of prize. Alternately if you have something of value, or a skill you can donate (a painting, perhaps) you can use that as a prize.

If you can find 3 solo performers, you can take turns on stage (a couple of songs at a time), and then maybe a group song or something...

have a "let's make on a CD" show, record the cd live in concert with your all star cast of friends joining in -make it clear it's your cd you are recording to the audience .... sell booze, raffle tickets, donated stuff, advance copies, brownies... pass a hat if you have to

don't bother to spend the money on good post production- let the performance attract you an agent and a contract.
              worked okay for jolie holland.

That's not a bad idea Ludmilla. The power of a live recording could be the way to go. Also Megan, I think it's not at all out of the realm of possibility to have a benefit show for your CD. I think all of us musician friends now just how hard it is to get some bread together for a recording. We're a community and we're all in thins together, so why wouldn't we want to help each other out? Personally I would play for free to raise money for your CD, I think if you asked most of us would. You'd do the same for us, what goes around comes around. Put something together , talk to some clubs, maybe DaSilva's would host it or the Knockout?

So, David, why are you of the opinion that the best CD to make would be a spare arrangement highlighting my voice? Part of the excitement of recording in a studio for me would be to be temporarily free of the chains that bind me in live shows. I could do more exciting things with arrangments, I think.

BTW - I have to thank you for uploading that "Mr. Peacock" clip a year or so ago. I am IN LOVE with that thing and play it often. I'm even trying to think of how I could effectively cover that song for gigs...

May my 42 either be very positively memorable or mercifully amnesiac.

David, I wasn't giving you shit. I really want to know....

Oh dear, I've been slow in responding to Tribe postings lately.

I just think it would be better to showcase your most obvious talent without worrying about letting the musicians come up with dynamic arrangements. Look at the first couple of Julie London albums. It's all about the vocals. The arrangements are as spare as can be and it's SWEET. I just listened to some favorite Otis Redding tracks today and it's the same thing. Different genre but same idea: the first two or three Marx brothers movies were based on stage plays that were well-rehearsed, and the were hits because they were in their element. Hell, same for the Beatles.

I might be a little biased because I've been going through a "less is more" phase". I'm trying to simplify my life and get rid of all the unnecessary stuff that surrounds me. But I still think it's a good rule of thumb.

At any rate, I can't wait to hear what you come up with!
