I only get a charge out of real band names that tickle me. My fave right now is Say Hi To Mom.

Yeah, that's cute and all, but I like some of these other ones we came up with way better.

I started playing with band names as an inheritance. I lived in the Co-op at UCLA and some folks that I knew there would write band names on the wall outside their door every time a good one came up in conversation. After they moved away, I wrote all the band names they generated into my notebook and started adding my own. I still have it somewhere. It's about 300 or so. I haven't kept it up, though. All the band names I have put on the net have not been written into that book.

Some of the band names that I suggested for our band, David, were from that list. I think my favorite of the ones I inherited was "No Belts No Pins". It came with a little anecdote about a guy who used to use a Bullwinkle voice and instead of saying "nuthin up my sleeve" would say "No Belts! No Pins!"

Oh yeah, No belts, no pins. It's good one. Sounds kinda girly, though. ;)

Didn't Fellman want to name the band "The Rarebits" or "The Rarebit Fiends"? Or maybe that was earlier. Or later. It's all a blur now.

I can't remember which ones he wanted. I think my suggestions were "No Belts, No Pins", "The Maroons" and "The Gandydancers". Of course I feel like all of them besides "No Belts" are kinda lame now.

Just to be clear, I like the real band names that amuse because they are facts, that some folks are trying to make living under, rather than just a game. I mean, I think it's tricky to go for humor monickers -- you want a name that's as clever as possible but not outright ridiculous. In most cases, anyway. See, there's bands that tell jokes and bands that *are* jokes -- and you wanna be careful you don't mean to be the first kind but end up the second kind. Then there was Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band, which was both kinds at once.

I hear ya, Mark of Zero. You're right - I would not want to go onstage as a member of MOST of the band names on this thread. Unless, maybe, I was already in an established group and we were doing a secret one-off performance and needed a pseudonym.

As if that would apply to my life in any way whatsoever. Oh well, I can dream...
